What we say

Keeping talent in #LoveLansing

Jun 7, 2017

One of the reasons I moved back to #LoveLansing was to find the sense of community that I felt I was missing after college. As soon as I moved away, I realized Lansing was an oh-so-very unique community. The people here are warm, welcoming, passionate and incredibly nice. When I moved back in August, I couldn’t wait to get involved and help make an impact in the community.

In early 2017, I met with the Lansing 5:01 folks for the first time in the wee hours of the morning at For Crepe Sake in downtown Lansing. Lansing 5:01 is a non-profit organization that strives to train and attract young professionals in Lansing through a series of events for students interning in Lansing each summer that showcase the best of our region. I left my first meeting in awe of each members’ passion for Lansing and for budding young professionals.

After months of planning, the Lansing 5:01 team’s hard work paid off. We hosted our first event of 2017 on Thursday, June 1. Interns from some of the best companies in the region, including AF Group, Michigan State University Federal Credit Union and Dart Container, were representing their companies. Seeing the next generation of young professionals networking and learning about what Lansing has to offer was so exciting, and I can’t wait to see how the next four events play out. (Also, Kate, P&G’s fearless leader, was the keynote speaker and had the group laughing. Let’s just say memes of ‘The Rock’ and ‘Friends’ were involved).

We ended the night watching ‘The Shallows’ on the Lansing riverfront while interns watched on the river on LED-lit kayaks. I left the evening with a permanent smile on my face and a sense of renewal for the Lansing community. I hope interns felt the same energy and passion for Lansing I did!

The remaining summer events are sure to be a hit – and are open to the public. Come check it out!
